Colin Shurrock-Apps is a clinical operations manager with Midlands Air Ambulance Charity.
THIS IS
COLIN'S STORY.
For Colin Apps, Clinical Operations Manager at Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, the role is about far more than responding to emergencies - it’s about leadership, compassion and ensuring every patient receives the highest level of care when it matters most.
Having dedicated 18 years to the charity, Colin brings a wealth of experience to both the clinical and operational sides of the service. His career began in the ambulance service as a paramedic, following earlier roles as a lifeguard and fitness instructor - all of which laid the foundations for his commitment to helping others in critical moments.
Today, Colin balances two vital responsibilities. As a critical care paramedic, he continues to work on the frontline, delivering advanced care to patients at the scene of incidents. Alongside this, as Clinical Operations Manager, he supports the wider team, ensuring operations run smoothly and that crews are equipped to deliver life-saving interventions.
Colin explains: “As a critical care paramedic and clinical operations manager, I spend my time both doing clinical shifts, where I care for patients, and supporting the operational team to make sure everything runs smoothly.”
Throughout his career, Colin has achieved significant milestones, including stepping into his leadership role and completing a master’s degree - accomplishments he is particularly proud of. But it is the day-to-day reality of the job that has had the greatest impact on him.
Experiencing traumatic incidents has shaped Colin’s outlook on life, reinforcing the importance of perspective and gratitude.
Colin adds: “Dealing with tragedies makes you realise that life can be short and it can end suddenly. It makes me want to live life to the fullest each day and realise how lucky I am.”
This mindset is closely tied to the ethos he brings to his work and team. In such a high-pressure environment, mutual support is essential. Colin highlights the importance of empathy and understanding among colleagues, where strong relationships help carry the team through both the most challenging and rewarding moments.
He says: “It’s so important to just be supportive, caring and understanding. Most importantly, never make assumptions. It’s a huge benefit that I work for and with a great team that gets that.”
At the heart of Colin’s role is a deep sense of purpose - one that continues to motivate him after nearly two decades with the charity.
He adds: “Being there to help when someone’s world turns upside down is a privilege that shapes how I live my own life.”
Outside of work, Colin prioritises spending time with his family and staying active. Whether it’s cycling, running, hiking or high-intensity workouts, he embraces physical challenges as a way to recharge. For Colin, these moments away from the frontline are vital in maintaining balance and wellbeing.
Every shift is an opportunity to make a difference, not only through the care he provides but through the leadership and support he offers his team. His dedication, both on and off the frontline, continues to play a crucial role in delivering the charity’s lifesaving service across the region.
