Bekie Ferris is a critical care paramedic with Midlands Air Ambulance Charity.

THIS IS

BEKIE'S STORY.

Delivering advanced care in high-pressure situations is all part of the role for Bekie Ferris, a critical care paramedic with Midlands Air Ambulance Charity.

With eight years’ service at the charity, Bekie brings extensive experience from her previous career as a paramedic with West Midlands Ambulance Service, where she began working in 2009. That background laid the groundwork for her progression into critical care, where she now operates at the very highest level of pre-hospital medicine.

Working on the frontline, Bekie attends a wide range of incidents, often in unpredictable and challenging environments. Her role involves making rapid clinical decisions and delivering enhanced interventions at the scene - care that can have a direct impact on patient survival and overall experience.

She says: “Caring for patients in their most vulnerable moments is why this work matters and why being there truly counts.”

The dynamic nature of the job is what continues to inspire her. No two shifts are ever the same and the ability to bring hospital-level care directly to patients is a key part of what makes the role so rewarding.

Bekie explains: “I enjoy the variety and unpredictability of the cases we attend. The speed we work at, rapid decision making and enhanced level of care we provide at the roadside can make a big difference to patient survival and experience.

Being prepared for the unknown is essential. Through ongoing education, regular training and learning from colleagues’ experiences, Bekie ensures she is ready to respond to whatever each callout may bring.

She adds: “Education and training are vital, as well as learning from other members of the team and their experiences.”

Strong relationships within the team play a crucial role in delivering effective care under pressure. A shared understanding and unwavering support for one another help create a resilient and highly effective working environment.

Bekie says: “We are a group of similar individuals and we always have each other’s backs.”

Away from the job, Bekie enjoys spending quality time with her husband and two children, keeping active at the gym and unwinding with a good book - important ways to reset after the demands of critical care work.

Every callout reinforces the importance of her role - bringing vital care to patients when they need it most and making a difference in moments that truly matter.
